DISAPPEARING
2023–2025

Disappearing loosely follows on from the previous series At Home. It was prompted by sad events in my family and the nearly year-long process of clearing out and sorting through the belongings of several generations of ancestors. The finitude of our efforts is one of the fundamental certainties of life. And yet it’s hard to accept — hard to come to terms with. Where does it all go? Covered tables hide long-familiar objects we used to touch every day; the emptied spaces of cleared-out apartments take on an almost transcendent quality.

My grandmother’s diaries — spanning four or five decades — packed into a neat little bundle, every day recorded. Photographs of dead people and vanished places. Witnesses to the passage of time.
